MHCET 2013 to be scrapped

MHCET 2013 to be scrapped

Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), Maharashtra has decided to scrapMHCET from 2013. Sources from DTE reveal that the DTE officials hold the view that a single management exam is much more beneficial for the students.

Only a week ago it was declared that MHCET 2012 will be postponed for avoiding its clash with the CMAT exam window. The fact that DTE gave more importance to the CMAT exam was probably the indication of CMAT replacing MHCET in 2013.

It was quite expected that CMAT will be replacing both MAT and MHCET, but AIMA has already announced the exam dates for MAT 2012 and 2013. However, MHCET will be replaced by CMAT in 2013, which will in turn increase the number of CMAT applicants as MHCET pool of candidates will now switch to CMAT exam. This will also prove to be beneficial for regional schools in Maharashtra as they will have large number of students from a diverse pool applying for admissions.

DTE on December 31, 2011 announced that institutes such as Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS) and Sydenham Institute of Management research and entrepreneurship (SIMSREE) will be accepting CMAT 2012 scores. Earlier, these institutes accepted MHCET scores primarily for admissions. Moreover, these institutes kept high cut offs in CAT exam as a major admission criteria due to which only few students could get admission but now the number of admissions is  surely expected to increase.  KJ Somaiya and Welingkar will be accepting CMAT 2012 scores too.

Students taking MHCET exam will find CMAT to be more beneficial as the MHCET paper structure was quite different from other exams whereas, the structure of CMAT closely follows the pattern of NMAT and SNAP, which the candidates are more familiar with.

Although DTE officials are in favor of a single management exam, there are certain issues that need to be taken care of.  Most of the applicants from the interior regions of Maharashtra taking MHCET, a paper pencil based test may not be so tech savvy and can find it difficult to appear for CMAT online test. It will be a big challenge for AICTE to cater to the needs of such applicants.

CMAT replacing most of the MBA entrance exams in India is expected to open the doors of opportunities for students and management institutes but at the same time it is also a challenge for AICTE to conduct a single national level management entrance test in a diverse country like India.

How successful AICTE is in conducting CMAT is yet to be seen with both students and institutes following “wait and watch policy”.

Record summer placements at IIMs amidst economic gloom

The IIM-A (Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad) has wrapped up its summer placement process in a record time this year. Other IIMs too witnessed record summer placements and a hike of 20% in stipends amidst economic gloom.

IIM-A had proposed to complete the placements by November 19, 2012, however, it managed to conclude it on November 16, 2012 itself as companies recruited in big numbers than anticipated. Over 130 recruiters including PricewaterhouseCoopers, World Bank, KPMG, Zovi, Cleartrip, L'oreal and Wipro consumer care visited the campus. The summer placement process for IIM-A concluded in the third cluster despite of weak job market which is a good indicator.

The institute shifted from day-zero system and spot-offer system to the cohort-system in 2010 which is more student friendly. Under this pattern, recruiters offering similar profiles visit the campus in groups rather than visiting randomly on any day whereas, spot offer implies that once a student receives an offer, he/she will have to opt out of the process. Many students preferred to opt for various roles offered by the startups this year.

IIM-Lucknow for the first time turned away30-40 firms as all the students were already placed in five and half days. The institute received 500 internship offers from about 220 recruiters.

IIM-Calcutta successfully recruited 466 students in just 4 days as against 5 days in 2011 while IIM-K was able to place its entire batch of 366 students within a record time of 25 days against the 308 students in 43 days of last year. IIM-B too hit a new record with students receiving 265 internship offers in 2 days.

IIFT entrance exam

IIFT entrance exam were taken by 56,000 candidates last year. If you have registered to take the IIFT 2012 exam, this article is meant for you. You will know the paper pattern and what should be your preparation strategy for the remaining 25 days.

IIFT tests your skills on quantitative ability, reading comprehension, English usage, data interpretation, logical reasoning and general awareness.

The number of questions varies every year; so candidates should be prepared to face any number of questions. Last year, the number was 120. The duration of the paper is two hours. Now, let us have a look at the pattern of questions in each of the sections.

Quantitative ability
IIFT 2011 had 24 questions in this section. The questions were from arithmetic, algebra, geometry, permutation & combination and probability. The difficulty level was moderate to tough.

Reading comprehension
IIFT offers separate sections for reading comprehension and English usage. The RC section had four passages which consisted of 15 questions. The questions were direct and the difficulty level was easy to moderate.

English usage
This section had 20 questions last year. The questions were on vocabulary and the sub topics were synonyms, antonyms, figure of speech and idioms. The rest of the questions were from grammar, para completion, sentence jumble and word jumble. The difficulty level was easy to moderate.

Data interpretation
This section had the questions in the form of sets, which were lengthy and time consuming. The question types were direct and the difficulty level was moderate.

Logical reasoning
This section had 21 questions in 2011. The difficulty level was easy to moderate. There were some questions from verbal logic and the others were from blood relations, team selection, arrangement, coding-decoding, information-based sets, syllogisms and course of action.

General awareness
This section had 21 questions of the tough difficulty level. The section had a mix of questions from static GK and current affairs. The question types were on personality & awards, business and economy.
If you have taken CAT 2012 or prepared for it, half of your preparation for IIFT 2012 exam is already done, as the sections and the topics are almost identical. The only uncommon section is general awareness, for which you need to prepare separately.

According to Arks Srinivas, CEO, VistaMind Education, candidates need to spend at least two hours every day for preparing general awareness. “General awareness and current affairs cannot be completed in 10 days. It requires steady and regular preparation,” he says.

What makes IIFT entrance exam different

What makes IIFT entrance exam different
The major difference between IIFT and the other exams is the section on general awareness. Another factor is the number of questions. There is no fixed number of questions, through the duration remains the same – two hours. IIFT 2011 had 120 questions, IIFT 2010 had 135 and IIFT 2009 had 122 questions. Compared with CAT (60 questions) or XAT (85-95 questions), the number of questions in IIFT exam is considerably high.

A candidate should keep in mind the following issues in order to do well in the IIFT 2012.

Time management: Time management is the most important aspect of cracking IIFT exam. Since the duration is just two hours and the number of questions is higher compared with other tests, you must make a strategy to answer the maximum number of questions accurately. “IIFT exam paper has two hours and there are too many questions that test selection capability and solving ability. The test is always a tough one to crack,” Srinivas Raman, a student of IIFT, said.

Speed: IIFT is a speed-based exam considering the number of questions and the time allotted to solve them. “You should be much faster in calculations and do loads of general reading. Start practicing speed mathematics a few weeks before the IIFT exam,” says Raman.

Maintain accuracy: Accuracy is an important factor for the IIFT exam as it involves negative marking. Since you have to put much of your focus and concentration on time management and speed, there are chances that you will not be able to check on the accuracy front. But you must not compromise on the accuracy factor. “Focus more on speed without compromising on the correctness of answers,” advises Magesh Kumar, an IIFT alumnus.

Expect the unexpected: As IIFT is a dynamic exam, you have to be prepared for any pattern of questions. “The paper pattern keeps changing every year; so you cannot really predict the pattern beforehand,” said Mahima Jain, an IIFT student who took the exam in 2010 and scored 39.60.

Put special focus on general awareness: Good preparation for the general awareness section will not only help you in the said section, but in the data interpretation section as well. “A good preparation in GK will help you in the DI section as well,” said Yogesh Kumar, who scored 42.89 in IIFT 2010 exam.

“The weightage given to the general awareness section is lesser than the other sections. Hence, make sure that you just clear the cut offs,” Mahima states.

While preparing for general awareness section, focus on sobriquets of famous personalities, recent awards, business & corporate news, etc.

More than 1000 schools will accept GRE scores across the world

More than 1000 schools will accept GRE scores across the world

Educational Testing Service (ETS) recently said that more than 1,000 business schools across the world will now accept the GRE scores for their MBA programmes. In this long list, 13 Indian B-Schools including Amrita School of Business, T A Pai Management Institute and Universal Business School are also included.

David Payne, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for the Higher Education division at ETS, said, "Schools want great candidates for their MBA and specialized masters programs and they recognize that GRE test takers are a highly qualified, highly diverse population. We have got great feedback from business schools who say they are pleased to see the number of applicants with GRE scores rise with each admissions cycle. Even schools like Harvard are now communicating directly to students that GREscores are valued."

This is one of the preferred tests with some additional qualities for students such as lowered fees, preview/review functionality and Quantitative Reasoning sections on-screen calculator. GRE officials also made announcement about the introduction of the new ScoreSelect option, according to that test takers can decide which GRE scores, from their reportable history they want to send to their designated schools.

Across the world more than 1000 business schools accept the GRE scores, the world's top ranked institutes such as Duke University, the University of Iowa and the University of Wisconsin-Madison also accept this test score as eligibility criteria.

Business schools are also happy with the diverse background of the students they get through GRE. Jenni Denniston, Director of MBA Recruiting and Admissions at the Ivey School of Business at Western University in Canada, said, "Accepting GRE scores opens up a new and diverse applicant pool for their full-time MBA program to seek applications from."

Other than IIMs, 172 B Schools accept CAT scores this year

Other than IIMs, 172 B Schools accept CAT scores this year

Other than IIMs, 172 B-Schools have decided to accept Common Admission Test (CAT) scores this year. Last year, the number was just 130. This year total 2.14 lakh aspirants have registered for the exam. The exam will be conducted for 21 days which will commence from 11th October, 2012. This year the exam is being coordinated by IIM-Kozhikode.

The number of institutes subscribing for CAT exam score is increasing gradually, besides decreasing number of CAT test takers in last three years. Last year, some of the leading institutes of the country such as six IITs, Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi University and Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar subscribed for the exam scores.

This year has noticed a minimal jump in the number of test takers which stood just 4.39%. Last year, 2.05 lakh candidates registered for the exam whereas year 2008 recorded the highest number of registration which was 2.76 lakh the highest of till now.

S S S Kumar, convenor of CAT 2012, said, "The slight increase in the number of applicants this year is a positive indication that postgraduate management programmes at IIMs and other B-schools that accept CAT scores still offer an attractive future to many aspirants. We are yet to analyze the factors that have contributed to the growth of institutions as well as candidates."

Similar to the previous years, Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Pune are the major contributors in the number of applicants, maximum number of candidates are scheduled to take test in these major cities. Kumar further added, "National Capital Region has recorded the highest number of registrations."

However CAT exam is famous for its surprises, but this year students are not going to see any big change in the exam pattern. This year it will try to maintain a much standardised approach to make it hassle free.

The India education practice head of a global consultancy firm said, "The continued dismal performance of Indian educational institutes on global rankings points to the lack of global mindset and dearth of research activity in the Indian education scenario. To be able to get into these prestigious rankings, institutes here need to concentrate on improving their research output and global content."

One interesting thing which was revealed in this FT Global MBA Ranking was that SP Jain School of Global Management located in Dubai and Singapore captured the 91st position in the ranking, but SP Jain Institute in India failed to get position in the list.

Indian management institutes have been performing badly in almost all world rankings published by well known organisations in past few weeks. Not even a single Indian institute got a position in the Top 200 universities across the globe in the QS World University Ranking. Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D) was listed at 212th position followed by IIT-Bombay at 227th place and IIT-Kanpur at 278th position.

The WEEK B-School ranking 2012: IIMs captured most positions in Top 10 List

The WEEK B-School ranking 2012: IIMs captured most positions in Top 10 List

The WEEK-Hansa Research Best Courses & Colleges Survey 2012 has recently published the report of India's Best B-School survey. The survey saw IIMs competing with each other IIMs to get a place in the list of top 10 B-Schools of the county. IIM-Ahmedabad once again captured the first position. It has been time and again rated at top position in various B-School surveys. In this survey the top three leading Indian Institutes of Management - IIM-Ahmedabad, IIM-Kolkata and IIM - Bangalore grabbed the first, second and third positions respectively.

XLRI Jamshedpur is ranked at fourth position, whereas IIM-Lucknow and IIM-Indore got 5th and 6th places respectively. IIM-Kozhikode which is not very old is gaining the popularity and each year performing good and then better in B-School ranking and survey. In this ranking it gained 8th spot and FMS Delhi is ranked at 7th position.

Some other prestigious management colleges such as SP Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR), Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management (JBIMS) and Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies are ranked among the top 15 B-Schools of the country. They captured the 9th, 10th and 11th position followed by MDI Gurgaon at 12th position and SCMHRD Pune at No.13.

The most surprising outcome of this ranking is ICFAI Hyderabad and K J Somaiya Mumbai standing above the National Institute of Industrial Engineering, Mumbai, which is ranked at 23rd place.

Though the prestigious old IIMs captured the maximum places in top 10 ranking, but the new IIMs did not even manage to get a place in top 25 B-Schools of the country, which is quite surprising to all.

New IIMs to join hands to get more recruiters and better placement

New IIMs to join hands to get more recruiters and better placement

The new Institutes of Management are planning to come together to handle the competition from older IIMs. The new IIMs said that they are thinking to synchronise their placements on similar pattern to what IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Calcutta used to do.

Godwin Tennyson, placement chairperson at IIM Tiruchirappalli, said, "The older IIMs synchronise their placements. Similarly, the newer IIMs can co-ordinate the placement process so that there is no job loss and the whole process is transparent. We will be exploring this option."

The numbers of IIMs have gone almost double in last two years from seven to 13 now. Besides, the major companies which these B-Schools persuaded for placement remain same. Therefore, the new IIMs are making new strategies and plans to get more companies to recruit students from their campuses.

The new IIMs ask recruiters to hire almost 75% of students as per their work requirement from older IIMs and 25% from newer IIMs as their batch sizes are comparatively less.

IIM Ranchi, placement committee member said, "The pool of the big recruiters remains the same. And, with most of them having been recruiting from the older IIMs, there is a loyalty factor. This makes it imperative for the new IIMs to come together to beat competition from other B-schools."

Sanjeev Pasashar, chairman, placements at IIM Raipur, said, "All the IIMs should work as part of a consortium as far as placements are concerned. There should not be any competition within the new IIMs. Our students are already in touch with students from other IIMs so that competition does not become unhealthy."
To attract maximum number of recruiters for placements the new IIMs are trying to keep their placement dates around the same time as older IIMs.

Survey reports: Just 29% students get a job after completion of B-School

Survey reports: Just 29% students get a job after completion of B-School

In last five year, the number of business schools has increased tremendously and reached to 4,000. Students spend big amount to get this degree, but now there is no surety that after getting this degree you will get a good paying job in slowing economy. No doubt still students from many B-Schools are bagging lucrative job offers but this trend is changing slowly. Presently, students from leading 20 colleges are getting lucrative job offers. Lavina Thadani, a 23-year-old MBA graduate, said, "I expected more after spending so much on my MBA," who took a 300,000-rupee loan to get her degree but earns only about 200,000 rupees a year. "If I had known earlier I would have never done my MBA."

According to a rating agency Crisil found that nearly 140 B-Schools offering Master of Business Administration (MBA) courses are about to face the closure, as nearly 35% of their seats were vacant in 2011-12, which are almost 15-20% more compared to last year.

Anshul Sharma, chairman of Asma Institute of Management, said, "The boom which was there has gone. Those who entered this industry with a motive to make money are leaving because there is not much money left. Every college is working to sustain itself."

There is nearly four-fold rise to more than 352,000 MBA course spots in the five years to March 2012. Only 29% of graduates from Indian business schools-excluding those from the top 20 B-Schools- get a job straight after completing their course, compared with 41% in 2008.

Aditya Dighe took out Rs 330,000 loan to fund his MBA from a school in India's financial hub of Mumbai. It is almost four month and he has taken 18 job interviews and his search is still on. He has taken the loan to fund his studies and if he will not get a job soon the repayment of the loan amount will increase as the time passes. He said, "The B-schools have promoted their brand only on placements and by boasting about salary packages. The course is theoretical and you don't learn the skills corporates want."

Indian B Schools gloomy performance continued in The Economist MBA ranking too

Indian B Schools gloomy performance continued in The Economist MBA ranking too

The Indian B-Schools have not performed well in recently published The Times Higher Education World Ranking and Financial Times World Ranking. Now another leading magazine, The Economist published an MBA ranking where once again these leading Indian B-Schools failed to secure a position. In the ranking list of top 100 business schools of the world Booth School of Business, US topped the chart. Only one Indian B-School Indian Institute of Management - Ahmedabad (IIM-A) managed to secure a place and that too at 56th position. IIM-A is the only B-School which is consistently securing a position in this B-School ranking from last three years.

US B-Schools have dominated this list with 45 management institutes including names such as Harvard Business School, Tick School of Business, Kenan Flagler Business School, Wharton School and Carlson School of Management. More than ten UK B-Schools grabbed positions institutes like Cass Business School, Henley Business School, Warwick Business School are ranked in the list.

IIM-A once again ranked at No.1 position in BT ranking

IIM-A once again ranked at No.1 position in BT ranking

It is not easy for any B-School to climb the ladder of raking surveys and sustain it for years, but IIM-Ahmedabad (IIM-A) knows how to climb and maintain it well. IIM-A has created monopoly over most of the ranking surveys and ranked at top position. From 2003 to 2010 IIM-A has been ranked at No.1 position in Business Today’s ranking. Last year, it slipped from its position of No.1 to No.3. IIM-A did not perform well last year, but this year it is back on top position.

IIM-Calcutta (IIM-C) is very consistent with its position and performance, this year it is ranked at second position and last year too it was ranked at same. However, Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), Delhi, has shown great progress by climbing seven places in latest ranking. Last year, it was ranked at 10th position and this year it is at 3rd place. This year IIM-Bangalore (IIM-B) has gone down four places from first position to 5th place. Some other prestigious B-Schools like Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS), Management Development Institute (MDI), and SP Jain Institute of Management Studies (SPJIMS) have shown great progress in their performances in overall ranking and grabbed positions among top 10 B-Schools.
