A Busy Bee has no Time
for Sorrow!
With
all the hype that ‘MBA’ brings in, it is quite natural to stray away after
making it into a good B-school. The fight has just begun when you thought the
battle is over.
Hurdles faced:
i) An MBA feels like a full-time
job or more. The pace is overwhelming.
ii) A full plate networking is
required to boost your career goals.
iii) Hunting for job, Attending classes
and club activities, Doing Homework etc. is strenuous work.
iv) Reading is a must. Plus group
and individual activities that make you a better selling product on your
resume. There is want of good direction and proper time and resource
management.
How to
Pass the Test:
i) What you are getting into: Some
B-schools focus on case studies and academic work. Some encourage students to
join club activities and competitions outside class. Focus on what you think is
relevant to you. Focus on activities that will enhance your career. Be
disciplined and knowledgeable. If your B-school is offering a student-mentor
program, sign up for it. It is good to have a first hand knowledge about your
school from an experienced senior student.
ii) Prioritize your activities: There
is academics, job hunting, networking, club activities, reading, hobbies,
family, creative thinking, future thinking etc. Prioritize your events. Be
disciplined. Resist joining clubs that interest you. Rather join those which
help you in your future. It’s a rarity of people failing in B-schools. But,
what we are looking for is a lucrative job. So it might even mean spending less
time on academics and focus one’s attention on some other events.
iii) Networking: Your School
networking can be a valuable career asset. Join a club and volunteer for
leadership positions to meet new people, including second-year students you
might not meet in classes. Spend downtime getting to know your peers—just
hanging out over dinner or drinks can be a good career investment. Let the
cut-throat competition not refrain you from helping your classmates. Be
friendly but professional. Bring business cards to class, career fairs and work
on presentations.
iv) Embrace the Pace: Keep the right
attitude. Embrace the hectic pace rather than taking it as a burden. Learn from
the experience. It will help you beat the deadline blues and thinking on your
feet. If you take it negatively, it will drive you insane. So buckle up!
