Other than IIMs, 172 B Schools accept CAT scores this year

Other than IIMs, 172 B-Schools have decided to accept Common Admission Test (CAT) scores this year. Last year, the number was just 130. This year total 2.14 lakh aspirants have registered for the exam. The exam will be conducted for 21 days which will commence from 11th October, 2012. This year the exam is being coordinated by IIM-Kozhikode.

The number of institutes subscribing for CAT exam score is increasing gradually, besides decreasing number of CAT test takers in last three years. Last year, some of the leading institutes of the country such as six IITs, Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi University and Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar subscribed for the exam scores.

This year has noticed a minimal jump in the number of test takers which stood just 4.39%. Last year, 2.05 lakh candidates registered for the exam whereas year 2008 recorded the highest number of registration which was 2.76 lakh the highest of till now.

S S S Kumar, convenor of CAT 2012, said, "The slight increase in the number of applicants this year is a positive indication that postgraduate management programmes at IIMs and other B-schools that accept CAT scores still offer an attractive future to many aspirants. We are yet to analyze the factors that have contributed to the growth of institutions as well as candidates."

Similar to the previous years, Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Pune are the major contributors in the number of applicants, maximum number of candidates are scheduled to take test in these major cities. Kumar further added, "National Capital Region has recorded the highest number of registrations."

However CAT exam is famous for its surprises, but this year students are not going to see any big change in the exam pattern. This year it will try to maintain a much standardised approach to make it hassle free.

The India education practice head of a global consultancy firm said, "The continued dismal performance of Indian educational institutes on global rankings points to the lack of global mindset and dearth of research activity in the Indian education scenario. To be able to get into these prestigious rankings, institutes here need to concentrate on improving their research output and global content."

One interesting thing which was revealed in this FT Global MBA Ranking was that SP Jain School of Global Management located in Dubai and Singapore captured the 91st position in the ranking, but SP Jain Institute in India failed to get position in the list.

Indian management institutes have been performing badly in almost all world rankings published by well known organisations in past few weeks. Not even a single Indian institute got a position in the Top 200 universities across the globe in the QS World University Ranking. Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D) was listed at 212th position followed by IIT-Bombay at 227th place and IIT-Kanpur at 278th position.

  1. NICE BLOG!!! Investment in a Business Management program is much more beneficial compared to investment in other academic programs. Perhaps, more so in the current situation of recession. Thanks for sharing...
